endocrine system Flashcards
what is negative feed back
negative feed back is the opposite response, if too much blood sugar is produced for maple, negative feed back will decrease the blood sugar . HELPS MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS
describe the relationship between the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland
the hypothalamus and pituitary gland are both located in the diencephalon
- hypothalamus moderates homeostasis and controls the pituitary gland (like CEO)
- pituitary gland is under control of hypothalamus and produces lots of hormones, the post pituitary gland produces antidiuretic hormone (conserves water) and oxytocin ( uterine muscle contractions)
what does the thyroid do, what hormones does it produce
the thyroid controls the bodies metabolic rate
produces T3 and T4 and calcitonin
(parathyroid produces PTH Increases calcium in blood)
what 2 hormones does the pancreas produce and what do they do
produces insulin and glucagon
INSULIN
- causes liver to absorb glucose and stop releasing it
GLUCAGON
- causes liver to break down glycogen and release glucose -
- produced when glucose is gone
what hormones does the adrenal gland release and what do they do
- epinephrine/nonepinephrin- makes/ stops making adrenaline
- aldosterone- aids in conservation of sodium, secretion of potassium, water retention, and stabilized blood pressure
- cortisol( adrenal cortex) - controls blood sugar levels, regulated metabolism and reduces inflammation
what is antidiuretic hormone and what does it do
an antidiuretic hormone a pituitary hormone that acs to promote the retention of water by the kidneys and increase blood pressure(WATER RETENTION)
