digestive system Flashcards
what is the difference between mechanical and chemical digestion
mechanical- the process of using force to break food down into smaller pieces (chewing)
chemical- the process of making polymers into monomers through hydrolysis
what happens to food in your mouth
food goes through mastication (chewing mechanical) and it also goes through salivary amylase (converts starch to maltose (chemical)
how does food get to your stomach
food gets fro your mouth to your stomach by swallowing where the for goes down your esphogous which connect the mouth to the stomach
what happens in the stomach to foo what is secreted to the stomach
the stomach is lined with mucus, in the stomach the food gets churned every 20 secs by 3 layers of smooth muscle. Also a chemical called hydrochloric acid (HCL), which has a pH of 2 and an enzyme called pepsin breaks down proteins
what happens in the small intestine to your food, how does the structure help this occur
in the small intestine is where the vast majority of digestion takes place. also absorbs stuff. the structure helps this happen because of one cell layer thick (diffusion ) and the high surface area contains villi and microvilli which increase surface area even more
what does bile do, where is it produced and stored
bile is a fluid that is made and released by the liver and is stored in the gall bladder. bile helps with digestion. it breaks down fats into fatty acids which can be taken into the body by the digestive tract
what occurs in the large intestine
waters reabsorbed, feces is stored, and vitamin K is produced
what is the role of the pancreas in digestion
-producing digestive enzyme
producing hormones such as insulin and glucagon
