Endocrine Flashcards
What does PPID stand for?
Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction
What is PPID caused by?
Neurodegenerative lesion
Causing loss of dopaminergic inhibition
What 4 hormones does the pars intermedia produce in excess in PPID?
- Beta-endorphin
- CLIP
- Alpha-MSH
- ACTH
What age would you expect PPID in?
What about EMS?
PPID: Over 15 years old
Never < 10
EMS: Younger
What would you expect to find in a Dexamethasone suppression test in a horse with PPID?
Cortisol would NOT be suppressed
Due to constant overproduction of ACTH and no negative feedback
What is the treatment for PPID?
Pergolide (dopamine agonist)
What is a commonly used prognostic indicator for PPID?
What do high levels suggest?
Insulin
High insulin suggests a poor prognosis
Short survival time and high risk of developing laminitis
What would you see with secondary hyperthyroidism?
What is it commonly caused by?
Goitre
Pregnant mares - Developmental Orthopedic Disease (DOD) in foals
Excess iodine
What predisposes to EMS?
What is the most common clinical sign?
What is the pathophysiology?
Obesity
Laminitis
Insulin resistance (dysregulation)
How do you diagnose EMS?
Resting hyperinsulinaemia
What are the main treatments for EMS?
Diet
Exercise
What are the main recommendations for EMS?
Diet
Exercise
