What is Addison’s disease?
Primary hypoadrenalism
Destruction of the adrenal cortex –> glucocorticoid (cortisol, sex hormones) and mineralocorticoid (aldosterone)
What are the symptoms of Addison’s disease?
Abdominal pain
Typical: lean, tanned, tired, tearful
Weakness
Hyperpigmentation of palmar creases and buccal mucosa
What would show in the bloods in Addison’s disease as a result of reduced aldosterone (mineralocorticoid)?
Hyponatraemia
Hyperkalaemia
Acidosis (more sodium excretion –> H+ retention)
What would show in the bloods in Addison’s disease as a result of reduced cortisol (glucocorticoid)?
Decreased glucose
What is the diagnostic investigation in Addison’s disease?
ACTH stimulation test
