Endocrine Flashcards
What organs make up the Endocrine System? (6)
- Pituitary
- Thyroid
- Parathyroid
- Adrenal
- Pancreas
- Gonads
The endocrine system is a blood born messenger system which controls and integrates many body functions: (5)
- Reproduction
- Metabolism (organic + mineral)
- Energy
- Growth
The endocrine system works quicker than the nervous system- true or false
false
it works slower
Characteristics of the Endocrine System:
- Slow and General
- Blood Borne
- Receptors located inside (steroid hormone) and outside (cell membrane- protein/peptide hormones) of cell
HORMONES CAN’T WORK WITHOUT RECEPTORS!
(i.e.- type II diabetes b/c no insulin receptors
Characteristic of the Nervous System:
- fast, precise, local
- action potentials
- receptors only at synapse
True or False- Ever cell has a receptor for Insulin (Pancreas), but not every cell has a receptor for parathyroid hormones.
TRUE
What is the relationship between the Hypothalamus and the posterior pituitary?
Neurohypophysis= Posterior Lobe
Hormones formed in the hypothalamus travel down axons and stored in axon terminals in posterior lobe (Neurohypophysis)
What connects the Hypothalamus to the Pituitary?
the Infundibulum (Pituitary Stalk)
How does the hypothalamus control activities of the Ant. Pituitary?
Hypothalamic secretions serve as RELEASING FACTORS and INHIBITING FACTORS for secretions of the ant. lobe
what are releasing factors?
Releasing Factors= short chain fatty acids
Not quite hormones, but stimulate/inhibit the release of anterior pituitary hormones
What are some examples of Releasing Factors?
GHRH, GHRF, Dopamine (Inhibit PRL), GnRH (stimulate FSH, LH), ACRH
