Endocrine Flashcards
For every change in pH of 0.1, the K changes…
.5mEq
Alkalosis causes K to move ? the cells, and ? Serum K
Into…decreases
Acidosis causes K to move ? the cells and ? serum K
Out of…elevates
What effect does HHS have on coagulation
Hyper-coagulable state d/t dehydration elevating risk for thrombosis/PEs
Symptoms of SIADH
Lethargy, HA and confusion d/t cerebral edema
N/V d/t GI Tract edema
Normal serum osmolality
275-295
Result of DI on serum Na
Increases causing hypernatremia d/t diuretics of hypotonic urine
Demeclocycline
Blocks the action of ADH or ADH-like hormone on the renal tubule
Sometimes used in SIADH
Oat cell carcinoma(ie small cell carcinoma)
Aggressive form of lung CA
Associated with paraneoplastic syndromes, hypercalcemia, Eaton lambert syndrome and SIADH
Difference between HHS and DKA
HHS - higher serum glucose, greater fluid deficit and therefore more osmotic diuresis and greater potassium deficit than DKA
DKA- require more insulin, lower glucose than in HHS
Post MI med that can block hypoglycemia signs and symptoms
Metoprolol
Blocks Beta ie sympathetic nervous system things like tachycardia, nervousness and diaphoresis
Difference between ADH and Aldosterone
ADH causes water retention whereas aldosterone causes water and Na retention
B cells
Aka B lymphocytes
Provide humoral immunity
Responsible for creating antigen specific antibodies and protecting the body from future encounters with the antigen
T cells
Have cytotoxic properties and help modulate the immune response.
Called cell mediated immunity
Lithium
Interferes with action of ADH at renal tubule
