Enalapril (ACE Inhibitor) Flashcards
Expected Pharmacological Action:
Blocks the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, leading to vasodilation and reduced blood pressure.
Therapeutic Use:
Hypertension
Heart failure
Prevention of stroke and heart attacks
Complications:
Hypotension
Dry cough (due to bradykinin buildup)
Angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, and throat)
Hyperkalemia
Blurred Vision
Tinnitus
Contraindications/Precautions:
Pregnancy (Category D – fetal harm risk)
History of angioedema
Severe renal impairment
Interactions:
Potassium supplements & potassium-sparing diuretics → increase risk of hyperkalemia
NSAIDs → reduce antihypertensive effects
Lithium
Client Education:
Monitor blood pressure regularly
Avoid potassium-rich foods (bananas, oranges, potatoes)
Report signs of angioedema immediately
Swallow Whole
take @ same time everyday
Dosage:
Oral: 2.5–40 mg daily (divided into one or two doses)
