Metoprolol (Beta-Blocker - Cardioselective) Flashcards
Expected Pharmacological Action:
Blocks beta-1 receptors in the heart, decreasing heart rate and blood pressure. Decrease release on renin and decrease of CO
Therapeutic Use:
Hypertension
Angina
Heart failure
Myocardial infarction prevention
Complications:
Bradycardia
Hypotension
Fatigue
Heart failure (if dosage is too high)
Photosensitive
Bronchospasm
Contraindications/Precautions:
Bradycardia
Hypotension
Asthma (high doses may affect beta-2 receptors and cause bronchoconstriction)
Hypersensitive
Heart Blocks
Interactions:
Digoxin → increases risk of bradycardia
Calcium channel blockers (e.g., verapamil, diltiazem) → excessive cardiac suppression
MAOI
Client Education:
Do not stop abruptly (risk of rebound hypertension & angina)
Monitor heart rate before taking (hold if HR < 50 bpm)
Change positions slowly to prevent dizziness
Diabetics take blood sugar often
Dosage:
25–100 mg
