What is the minimum wage?
It’s the lowest amount a worker can be paid per hour for their job, the amount depends on your age. Everyone in the UK is entitled to it
What should all employees receive?
A written contract of employment and a copy of the business’ discipline procedure (shows what gets them a warning and a dismissal)
What’s the equality act 2010?
It is a law put in place to stop discrimination within the workplace
It allows equal opportunities in the workplace for pay and promotion
What does the equality act cover?
Discrimination against: age, religion, sexual orientation, race and gender
What is classed as a fair dismissal? (Employment Act 2002)
Someone dismissed if they are incapable of doing their job
Gross misconduct or incompetence
What does redundancy mean?
That your job no longer exists, you get compensation
What can you do if you think you have been dismissed or made redundant unfairly?
Go to an employment tribunal to appeal, if you are successful you can get compensation or go back to work (reinstate)
What is the health and safety legislation?
Laws that make the workplace safer for employees
It’s put in place to prevent staff from being harmed or becoming ill due to work
What types of things are business required to do to comply with health and safety acts?
Risk assessments
Trained first aiders must be present, and an accident book
Health and safety equipment must be provided- hard hats on building sites etc
How many weeks of paid leave are new mothers and fathers allowed?
39 weeks mothers
2 weeks fathers
What are the problems with women taking maternity leave for a business?
Pay an extra worker- higher costs
Existing staff could cover the work, but they have less time for their usual tasks- reduced productivity
Why are businesses good and supportive to women on maternity leave?
They want them to return to work, saves money on recruiting and training for new staff
