Approaches to controlling emotions.
A positive or negative reaction to a perceived or remembered object, event, or circumstance, accompanied by a subjective feeling.
Emotion.
Emotion is a thought coupled with a physical sensation or feeling. Change either one to change emotional state.
Mind = Body connection
Virtually all emotions are fundamentally about physical safety and well being or social safety and well being.
Purpose emotions serve.
An innate emotion that has universal and fixed facial expression across all human cultures.
Basic emotions.
“Laws” which govern how we in our culture are permitted to express emotions publicly.
Males: Tough and aggressive
Females: Wide range of emotions. Encouraged to express.
Display rules.
Emotions are felt after the body reacts and are the result of varying physical reactions to stimuli.
James-Lange Theory
You feel emotions in part because of the way your muscles are positioned in your face.
Facial feedback hypothesis. James-Lange Theory.
There are separate brain systems for different emotions. Some systems operate as reflexes, others depend upon thought and interpretation.
Cognitive theory.
What purpose do emotions serve? (4)

- Motivate to act.
- Prepare body to act.
- Communicate with others what we are feeling.
