Schaffer & Emmerson’s Stages of Attachment

A
  • Person who plays and communicates with infant is more likely to form an attachment.
  • Preattachment: 0-3months. Respond indiscriminately.
  • Indiscriminate: 3-7months. know unfamiliar and familiar faces but go to everyone.
  • Discriminate: 7-9months. Develop attachments. Shoe stranger anxiety.
  • Multiple: 9months. Strong emotional ties with other caregivers.

Ainsworth’s Type of Attachment

A
  • Secure: Meeting all child need. show distress when caregiver leaves but greets when they come back.
  • Insecure/Avoidant: Does not meet child needs. Doesn’t show distress. Explore. Go to stranger for comfort.
  • Insecure/Resistant: Inconsistent in meeting child needs. Distress when they leave but resists them when they come back. Show anxiety.
