Kinds of Motivation

Intrinsic motivation:
* Taking actions that are themselves rewarding.
* Tend to be more satisfying
- Extrinsic motivation:
- Taking actions that are not themselves rewarding but that lead to a reward
- May undermine intrinsic rewards
- Delayed gratification:
- Engaging in behaviors that will bring greater rewards in future
- Predictive of future success
- Threats or punishments can make the prohibited behavior more appealing.
- Approach motivation:
- A motivation to experience positive
outcomes - Promotion focus
- Avoidance motivation:
- A motivation not to experience negative
outcomes - Prevention focus
- Tends to be more powerful
