Emergency supply of POM w/o valid Rx present at time of dispensing
What are the types of emergency supply?
- At request of patient
- At request of prescriber
What are the conditions that apply to supply at the request of a patient?
Pharmacist has interviewed patient + satisfied w/:
- Immediate need for POM + impractical to obtain prescription w/o delay
- POM has been previously prescribed
- Appropriate dose
What are the exceptions for the emergency supply at the request of a patient?
No provision for sched 2 + 3
What are the maximum number of days for a sched 4 + 5 of an emergency CD at the request of a patient?
5 days
What are the maximum number of days for an emergency supply of POM at the request of a patient?
30 days
What are the exceptions to the ‘maximum of 30 days supply/ for a POM at the request of a patient?
- Insulin
- Ointment
- Inhaler
- Contraceptive
What must be included when making an entry in the POM register when supplying at the request of a patient?
- Date supplied
- Name, quantity, form + strength
- Name + address of person requiring POM
- Nature of emergency (why they need it + why prescription cannot be obtained)
What must be labelled on the package when supplying at the request of a patient?
- Date supplied
- Name, quantity, form + strength
- Name of person requesting
- Name + address of pharmacy
- ‘Keep out of reach of children’
Can you supply a CD at the request of a patient?
- No sched 1 + 2
- No 3 except phenobarbital or phenobarbital sodium for EPILEPSY
What is the difference when supplying an emergency POM during a pandemic?
- Pandemic announced by DoHSC
- Don’t need to interview patient
What are the conditions that apply to supply at the request of a prescriber?
- Pharmacist satisfied that supply requested by doctor who are unable to furnish prescription immediately
- Prescription sent to pharmacy w/in 72 hrs
- POM sold/supplied in accordance w/ directions of appropriate practitioner
Can you emergency supply a CD at request of a prescriber?
- No provision for sched 1 or 2
- No provision for sched 3 except phenobarbital or phenobarbital sodium for EPILEPSY
What records must be made when supply at the request of a prescriber?
- Date supplied
- Name, quantity, form + strength
- Name + address of practitioner requesting
- Name + address of patient
- Date on prescription
- Date prescription was received (3 dates)
What are the differences btw at the request of a practitioner + at the request of a patient?
- Quantity doesn’t matter/30 days max
- Prescription w/in 72 hrs/no prescription
- ‘Emergency supply’ do not appear on label/does appear
- Must record practitioner details in POM register/ don’t legally have to
- Interview w/ patient not required/ required
- Can supply new medication/ Previously supplied
