First Aid Basics
Maintain airway and breathing
Treat wounds and stop hemorrhaging
Stabilize animal/minimize pain

Airway (obstruction/compromise needs to be immediately resolved)
Breathing (check if animal breathing)
Circulation (apply pressure bandages to all sources of external hemorrhage)
What disease does choke mimic?
Rabies
What is most animals blood volume?
10% of their body weight
What is hypovolemic shock?
Losing too much blood, low body temp, decreased mentation, weak pulse, pale mucus membranes
What is hyperthermia?
Heat stress/heat stroke, an increase in body’s thermal set point
What should you not do when an animal is in heat stress?
Dunk the whole body into ice, will shock system
What is septicemia?
bacteria in the blood
What should you avoid when applying bandages?
Do not wrap too tightly cutting off circulation
Benefits of emergency splinting
- stop hemorrhage
- prevent exacerbation of injury
- prevent further contamination
What are the risks of improper disposal
- chemicals could get into ground and surface water from leaching chemicals
- nuisance complaints
- risks to human and animal health
