What is biosecurity?
All actions undertaken to prevent disease agents from being introduced or exiting a specific area or group of animals
Why is biosecurity important?
It keeps the community safe
Components of biosecurity
- proper animal management
- facility design/traffic flow
- quarantining new animals
- employee/visitor management
- cleaning and disinfecting
- pest/vector control
- vigilance
What is a “closed” herd
Everyone comes in at the same time and everyone leaves at the same time
Quarantine vs Isolation
Quarantine: bringing a new animal into herd or old animal back, held away from rest of herd
Isolation: someone gets pulled out of the herd that is sick
Care timing for biosecurity
Youngest -> Healthy adults -> Sick adults
What does a veterinary health certificate indicate?
It indicates that the animal is visibly free from disease but they cannot say the animal is 100% free of disease
Cleaning
Physical removal of debris, washing with clean water and soap
Disinfecting
Use of chemicals to kill NEARLY all pathogens
Sanitation
Destruction of all forms of microbial life with heat, chemicals, or gas
