flexion of embryo
begins at the end of 3rd week, rapid growth causes the embryo to buckle, resulting in a series of folds
week 4
flexion of embryo, branchial arches, development of brain.
branchial arches
series of transverse elevations and depressions, grow together and meet at midline
1st branchial arch
mandibular arch which includes lower lip, muscles of mastication, mandible, anterior portion of the tongue, and some structures of middle ear.
2nd branchial arch
hyoid arch which includes: upper body and lesser horns of the hyoid bone, stapes, and muscles of facial expression
3rd branchial arch
lower body of the hyoid bone, posterior portion of the tongue.
4th and 5th arches
cricoid and arytenoid cartilages of the larynx, cartilages of the trachea
6th branchial arch
caudal arch: palatine muscles and pharyngeal constrictor.
week four
nasal pits, arm and leg buds, otic pit, umbilical cord.

prosencephalon, mesencephalon, and rhombencephalon.
