Zygote
a new cell formed from the union of two gametes (egg and sperm)
Embryo
organism in the early stages of growth and differentiation, extends from fertilization to the end of the 8th week
mitosis
the process of division of the chromosomes and then the division of the cytoplasm to form two identical cells; 2, 4, 8 cell stage
morula
12 to 16 cells about the third day after fertilization
blastocyst
when the cells begin to separate into two masses and attaches to the uterine lining
trophoblast
becomes the placenta
inner cell mass
becomes the embryo
week two
cell differentiation in two three layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm.
ectoderm
epidermis of skin, teeth, nervous system, hair, nails, epithelial tissue
mesoderm
connective tissue: bones, muscles, blood vessels, and cartilage.
endoderm
epithelial lining of digestive and respiratory tract.
