1.protecting the sabbath-puritans believed Sunday should be reserved for pray
2.stopping pagan practices- puritans believed some pagan practices eg may day were distractions from the Christian religion
3.preventing violent disorder- Puritans disproved of people getting drunk and violent from festivals as they didn’t see it as Christian behaviour
4.preventing sex outside marriage- festivals may lead to the sin of sex outside marriage

Why were witches persecuted?
1.tension between villagers- power for the powerless explains confessions and lots of unexplained terrible things happen
2.attacks on women- 90% of witchcraft accusations were women and in a patriarchal society was a way to deal with women without husbands
3.puritans- puritan ministers encouraged persecution to get rid of magical beliefs. Essex had a high number of accusations and was highly puritan
