Who was Abraham Lincoln?

A

‘Honest Abe’ presented himself as a man of the people and promised to stop expansion of slavery and give free land to western settlers. Promised northern transcontinental railroad. Challenged southern beliefs so south said they would Secede from USA to protect state rights. (1860 elected)

A

South Carolina voted 169-0 to secede and six states followed to form a new country called ‘the confederacy’

By 1846 congress was dominated by northern politicians who voted to ban slavery in new territories(California). Many south believed this meant slavery wasn’t allowed in the west so they questioned the Missouri compromise

A

Pro-slavery politician offered a compromise to south worries of losing political power:
1.California be a free state
2.Territories gained from Mexico should make own decision on slavery
3. All states accept FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT agreeing to return escaped slaves

A

April 1861 The confederacy attacked fort sumpter by opening fire on union soldiers after Lincon said it was illegal for south to secede
