The north(republicans) and the south(democrat)
what was the democratic economy like?
It was dependent on the plantation system and was mainly farming and trade
What was the republican economy like?
CAPITALIST- anyone could start a business. There were lots of jobs( farming, cotton processing etc)
Republican beliefs on slavery?
It was unfair to enslave others
Democratic beliefs on slavery?
Natural and right + it made them rich. State government more important than national government
What was bleeding Kansas?
Political violence outbreak in Kansas around slavery beliefs- about 200 deaths. 1850s
what was the 1854 Kansas Nebraska act?
overturned Missouri compromise which wouldn’t allow slavery in Nebraska and allowed a vote on whether they wanted slavery
Who was James Buchanan?
A democratic president elected in 1856 who openly supported slavery above the Missouri compromise line and made people support republicans in next election
Who was Abraham Lincoln?
‘Honest Abe’ presented himself as a man of the people and promised to stop expansion of slavery and give free land to western settlers. Promised northern transcontinental railroad. Challenged southern beliefs so south said they would Secede from USA to protect state rights. (1860 elected)
what happened in the south 1860-61?
South Carolina voted 169-0 to secede and six states followed to form a new country called ‘the confederacy’
Who was the confederacy’s leader?
Slaveholder Jefferson Davis who stated any state could leave the USA by democracy. “test of state power vs president power”
How did the cotton gin encourage the Civil war?
It made the north more angry as more people were enslaved to keep up with the pace of it
How did the Louisiana purchase encourage the civil war?
Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi joined the US as slave states and the land for plantations within the cotton kingdom increased
What was the Anti-Slavery society?
William Lloyd-Garrison and Arthur Tappan formed the national anti-slavery society which grew to 250000 members by 1838. Freed slaves told stories through essays and pamphlets
What was the underground railroad?
A railroad set up by former slaves such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman and others to help smuggle escaped slaves to freedom. Thousands escaped
