Elemnets, Compounds, Mixtures Flashcards
What is an element?
An element is a pure substance that can not be broken down into any other substance by any physical or chemical means.
A pure substance is a substance that is made up of only one kind of atom.
Examples are gold or 79(Au) and oxygen 8(O)
What are atoms ?
The basic particles from which all elements are made of. Different elements are different because they contain different atoms.
How do elements get their names?
Elements are represented by 1 or 2 letters, often from the Latin or Greek name for the element. The first letter is capital and the second one lowercase. Au- aurum , Light for gold. Ag- Argentum, silver. Fe - ferric, iron Na= sodium O=oxygen H= hydrogen Ca=calcium Cl = chlorine C= carbon S= sulfur
Each element can be identified by its own . . . .
Characteristic properties.
For example , physical properties are melting point, boiling point, and density.
Chemical properties are reacting with acid.
What can matter be classified into?
Matter can be classified into elements, compounds, and mixtures.
