Q

What particles are outside of the nucleus in an atom?

A

These particles are called electrons and have a negative charge .(e-) found in electron clouds. So small they are 0 amu .

Q

How can you find the number of electrons in an atom?

A

The number of protons in an atom (atomic number) can tell you how many electrons there are. Atoms are neutral. Ions are atoms with missing or extra electrons.

Q

What is the simplest atom made of ? And what does an atom need to be an atom?

A

Every atom needs a proton and electron. The simplest atom is made up of one proton and one electron. This is a hydrogen atom.

Q

What is the typical atom made of

A

Number of protons equals number of electrons. Atoms have varying number of neutrons in the nucleus and holds the nucleus together. The number of protons in the nucleus tells you what kind of element it is. This is the atomic number. Atomic number never changes

Q

What are isotopes ?

A

Isotopes are atoms with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons. Radioactive isotopes have unstable nuclei that spontaneously fall apart. All isotopes of an element share most of their properties. Can be identified by its mass number . Mass number = number of protons and number of neutrons .an isotope is named by its element’s name and mass number . The number of neutrons in an atom can be figured out if you know the isotope name
