Elements, Mixtures & Compounds - Unit 1 Topic 1 Flashcards
What is an element?
Material that can’t be split into anything by chemical means. Contains 1 type of atom.
What is a molecule?
2+ atoms chemically bonded together. Atoms can be same or different.
Give me 3 qualities of metals?
Shiny Malleable & ductile Solid at normal temperature (not Mercury) Good electrical conductors Good heat conductors High melting/boiling points
Give me 3 qualities of non-metals?
Dull (except diamond) Soft & brittle (except diamond) Can be gas/solid/liquid at room temperature Bad conductors of heat Bad conductors of electricity (except graphite) Low melting/boiling points
What is a compound?
Material made of 2+ different elements chemically bonded together. Difficult to separate. Can only be broken down by chemical means. Different properties from elements making up them.
What is a mixture?
2+ substances mixed together. Easy to separate. Same properties as elements made of.
What does soluble mean?
Solid that dissolves in a liquid solvent (sugar/salt)
What does insoluble mean?
Solid that doesn’t dissolve in a liquid solvent (sand)
What is a solute?
Substance that dissolves in a liquid. (Salt/sugar)
What is a solvent?
Substance that dissolves a solid. (Water)
What is a solution?
Mixture of a solvent and solvent (salty water)
What is the residue?
Solid trapped in filter paper. (Sand)
What is the filtrate?
Liquid that passes through the filter paper. (Water)
What is the distillate?
Condensed liquid in distillation, collected. (Water)
What does miscible mean?
Liquid that mixes with another liquid. (Ethanol & water)
What does immiscible mean?
Liquid that doesn’t mix with another liquid (oil & water)
What is filtration?
Separates insoluble solid from liquid (sand & water)
What is evaporation/crystallisation?
Separates solute from solvent (salt & water)
What is a Separating funnel for?
Separates 2 immiscible liquids (oil & water)
What is chromatography for?
Separate colours in dyes.
What is mass spectrometry for?
To determine RAM/RMM.
How do you find RAM? What is it?
Relative Atomic Mass. ( a% x mass) + (b% x mass) (——————————-) (. 100. )
Why are 2 pros & 2 cons of Mass Spectrometry?
Pros - fast. Results linked to database. Cons - expensive. Isotopes mean 1+ peaks.
What is HPLC for? What is it?
High Performance Liquid Chromatography Number of components In a mixture.
2 pros & 2 cons of HPLC?
Pros - fast & accurate Cons - must be liquid, expensive.
What is fractional distillation for?
It separates 2 soluble liquids with different boiling points.
