Bonding - Unit 1 Topic 3 Flashcards
What ions do metals form?
Cations (positive ions)
What ions do non-metals form?
Anions (negative ions)
What are molecular ions?
Ions composed of two or more atoms covalently bonded.
What is ionic bonding?
Bonding between a metal and a non-metal. Opposite charges attract them.
Draw the ionic bonding between magnesium and fluorine.
Mg = 2,8,2 Fl = 2,7
Mg loses 2 electrons. Mg transfers 2 electrons, 1 to each Fluorine atom. Mg = 2,8 Fl = 2,8
What is covalent bonding?
Shared pair of electrons between 2 non-metals.
What is a diatomic molecule?
2 atoms in each molecule.
Show the covalent bonding between 2 oxygen atoms
Show a lone pair and a bonded pair of electrons.
2 bonding pairs of electrons
What is metalllic bonding?
Positive ions in a regular lattice in a sea of delocalised electrons.
