Elements , Compounds And Mixtures Flashcards
What is solids ?
A solid is when the particles are packed tightly together
What is a liquid
When the particles caan move and slide past each other
What is a gas?
When the particles are apart from each other and move alot
What is an element ?
An element is a substance that cannot be split up into simpler substances by chemical means. Elements contain only one type of atom
What is an example of an element ?
Gold , oxygen
What is a compound?
A compound is a substance that is made up of two or more different elements that are chemically combined. Compounds contain two or more different types of atoms joined together by chemical bonds.
What is an example of a compound ?
Water , carbon dioxide
What is a mixture?
A mixture consists of two or more different substances mingled together but not chemically combined
What is a example of a mixture?
Air , salt water
What are the difference between mixtures and compounds?
A mixture has two or more substance , a compound is a single substance
Easy to separate the elements in a mixture , very difficult to separate the elements in a compound
Compound is chemically combined, mixture is mingled together
What does iron + sulfur make ?
Iron sulfide
Fe + s = FeS
What are examples physical changes ?
Breaking glass , cutting paper , tying a knot
What are examples of chemical changes ?
Wood burning , metal rusting , digestive system
Wat is the law of conservation of mass ?
The law of conservation of mass states that when a chemical reaction occurs , the total mass of the reactants is always quality to the total mass of the products
