Digestive System Flashcards
What does digest mean?
Digest means to break down large food particles into small food particles
Why do we need a digestive system ?
Cells need energy
Food helps us to grow and repair our muscles
We ea food but the particles are to big to enter our cells
What a re the parts of the digestive system ?
Mouth , salivary glands , oesophagus , liver , stomach , gall bladder , pancreases , small intestine , large intestine ( colon , rectum , anus )
What is the function of the mouth?
Takes in food and chews it
What is the function of the salivary glands ?
Produces amylase
What is the function of the oesophagus?
Carries food from the mouth to the stomach
What is the function of liver?
Produces bile to aid digestion of fat
What is the function of the stomach?
Churns food , adds hydrochloric acid to the food
What is the function of the gall bladder ?
Stores bile until it is needed in the small intestine
What is the function of the small intestine ?
Digests food , absorbs food into blood
What is the function of the pancreas ?
Make enzymes to digest food
What is the function of the colon?
Absorbs water from food into the blood
What is the function of the rectum?
Stores fences for egestion
What is the function of the anus ?
Allow faeces to pass from the body (egestion)
What is the function of the larger intestine ?
Prepares undigested food for engestion
What are the two types of digestion ?
Mechanical digestion , chemical digestion
What is mechanical digestion?
Physically breaking down food with teeth
Churning by the stomach
What is chemical digestion ?
Enzymes break down larger food molecules into smaller soluble molecules
What is peristalsis ?
Peristalsis is a muscular movement that only occurs in the muscles of the digestive system. It causes food to be pushed along the system
What is enzymes ?
An enzyme is a chemical found in cells it speeds up chemical reactions
What are the 5 steps in the path of food and what they do ?
- Ingestion - taking in food (eating)
- Digestion - breaking down the food
- Absorption - the food passing into the blood system ( for delivery to all cells of the body)
- Assimilation- the food being put to use by the cells , for example energy , growth , repair
- Egestion - passing any unabsorbed food out in the form of faeces
What are teeth and their functions ?
Molar - chews and grind food
Premolar - chews ad grinds food
Canine - grips and tears food
Incisor - cuts and slices food
What is the equipment for the experiment to investigate the digestion of starch by the enzyme amylase ?
Boiling tubes
Starch solution
Water
Enzyme : amylase
Thermometer
Iodine
Dropper
What is the method for the experiment to investigate the digestion of starch y the enzyme amylase ?
- Using a dropper add 5 mls of starch solution to each boiling tube
- Add 2mls of amylase to the test tube labelled A
- Add 2mls of water to the test tube labelled B.
- Place both test tubes in a water bath at 37 degrees for 10 mins
- Add a few drops of iodine to each test tube.
- Record your results.
What is the result and conclusion of the experiment to investigate the digestion of starch by the enzyme amylase ?
Initial colour of iodine - final colour of iodine :
Starch + water - orange brown , blue black
Starch + amylase - orange brown , orange brown
Amylase breaks down starch into maltose
