Element 8 Chemical Flashcards
Identfy three type of Asbestos commonly found in building materials
- Chrysotile
- Crocidolite
- Armosite
Outline where asbestos is likely to be encountered in a building during renovation
Some of the most common building materials containing asbestos are boiler and pipework coatings and laggings. Sprayed coatings providing fire or acoustic insulation. Insulation boards, and cement based boards , sheets and formed products such as roofing sheets. Asbestos can be found in some ceiling tiles and some floor tiles and some textured surface coatings.
Identify forms of chemical agents
- dusts
- fumes
- gases
- mists
- fibres
- vapours
- liquids
Outline the differences between acute and chronic health effects from exposure to chemical agents
Acute health effects are short duration generaly conclude with recovery or death. Chronic conditions last longer months - years and some such as cancer can occur 20 - 30 years after exposure
Outline the purpose of a WEL (workplace exposure limit)
WELs are designed to control the absorption into the body of harmful substances following inhalation, and are concerned with limiting the amount of inhailable harmful air by the use of standard control methods e.g Local exhaust ventilation and the main objective is to reduce personal exposure to the lowest possible level by means that are reasonable practicable
Outline control meaures that could be used to reduce the risk of exceeding the assigned WEL
General control measures include:
- Elimination
- Substitute
- Process change
- Enclosure ( can be as simple as adding a lid on a volotile substance to fully enclosing a process)
- Reduce the number of people involved by segregation
- Reduce the time of exposure ( job or task rotation)
- Local exhaust ventilation
- Dilution or general ventilation
- Good house keeping
- Training and information
- Supervision
- Respiratory protectie equipment
- PPE
- Hygiene
- Welfare ( including first aid)
- Mdical reports
- Health surveilance
Oultine controls that should be taken to reduce risk to the health of workers onsite when asbestos containing material is found
Restrict the area,Ensure workers are suitable informed of the dangers.
where removal is determinned enclose the area and keep it under negative pressure, testing for leaks
Provide appropriate ppe and a decontamination unit
, operatives removing any asbestos containing material should be suitable trained. Use controlled wet removal methods, dry removal processes are unacceptable. Use a wrap and cut method and glove bag technique
Where appropriate use measure which control the fibres at source failing this a second operative can use a handheld vacuum right next to the source emitting the fibres. Thoroughly clean the area and obtain a clean air certificate upon completion
