Element 5 Work equipment Flashcards
Outline control measures that should be adopted when cutting paving slabs with a petrol disc cutter
A close fitting hood guard should be in place, the tool should under go regular inspections. Staff should have the proper training and be aware of the hazards and risks. Filter face masks should be worn and the correct personal protective equipment. Ensure the coreect blade and proper rotations per minute for the task and the material being cut is secured. Do not use excessive force and use coolant to lubricat ethe ct an dsupress dust.

Outline precautions for use of bench top grinders
The wheel should be enclosed as much as possible in a strong casing, which should be capable of containing a burst wheel. To prevent movemnt the grinder should be securley bolted down. The adjustable tool rest should be adusted as close to the wheel as possible, the adustable screen should be fitted over the wheel to protect the operators eye and sutable PPE should be worn. Only trained and competent people should mount the abrasive wheel. Maximum speed should be marked on the machine so wheels can be matched and the machine should undergo regukar maintenance, testing and inspection.
Identify non-mechanical hazards when undertaking maintenance on machinery
- electricity including static electricity causing shock or burns
- chemicals or substances that may be toxic, irritant, flammable, corrosive or explosive
- Mists, dusts and fumes that can cause ill-health
- Noise leading to loss of hearing, tiredness and interference with speech communication
- Poor ergonomic design leading to long term musculoskeletal conditions
- Vibration
- Radiation
Identify mechanical hazards from work equipment
- Crushing
- Shearing
- Cutting or severing
- Entanglement
- Drawing in or trapping
- Impact
- Stabbing or puncture
- Friction or abrasion
- HIgh pressure fluid injection
Identify factors that could determine the maintenance requirements of work equipment
- Manufacurers instructions
- Legislation
- Environmental conditions
- Frequency of use
- Type and class of equipment, some types require weekly other less
- The equipments potectial to cause harm
Suggested measures to prevent or reduce injurys from manual handling.
