Electromagnetism Flashcards
What materials are affected by magnets?
Ferrous: Iron, Coblat, Nickel, Steel
What is magnetism?
When magnets attract other objects with a non-contact force
what is a permanent Magnet
when domains are in the same direction all the time
Magnetic Field
Area around magnet which has effects
Domains
Magnetic materials have atom with a charge
Where do compasses point
South pole of magnet
What is a series circuit?
Electrons flowing through only one path
What is a parallel circuit?
A circuit with branches, current divides and only part of it flows through the branch
What is a short circuit?
High volume electrical current is passed through a low-resistance path
What is voltage?
How much energy is given to electrons
What is current
Flow of electrons
Simple motor has…
- Magnet
- Coil
- Power supply
Principle of Motor
Magnetic field of magnet and field of current interact and make the wire move.
WIRE DOESN’T NEED TO BE MAGNETIC, JUST CONDUCTING
Motor Effect
Wire with current interacting with another magnetic field causing a force that pushes the wire at angles
Why does the wire in the motor spin
- Forces on both sides due to motor effect
- force on one side is opposite direction to the other side
- Commutator reverses current energy every half-turn of the coil.
Electric motor
Designed to use the motor effect
How to change motor speed?
Alternate the current
How to reverse a motor’s speed?
Reversing the current
Current in series circuit?
Is the same
Current in a parallel circuit?
The current splits up, then recombine when the branches meet up. (Sum of current in branches equal total current)
Voltage in a series circuit?
Shared between components. (Sum of the voltage across each component is same as the total supply)
Voltage in parallel circuit?
In each component, it is the same as the supply voltage
What does Ammeter measure?
Amperes
What does voltmeter measure?
volts
How is ammeter connected to the circuit?
In series
How is voltmeter connected to the circuit?
in parallel
