Climate and Ecology Flashcards
Climate Change
Impct on the planet that can be ecolofical, geological
Greenhouse Effect
Carbon dioxide and methane in the air naturally (greenhouse gas), that keeps the air warm
Global warming
increasing of greenhouse gas, and increading of greenhouse effect. Average temperatures across the globe is increasing
What is crittically endangered
A species facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild
What is endangered
A species considered to be facing a very high risk of extenction in the wild
What is vulnerable
A species considering to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild
Reasons for being endangered (4)
- Antropogenic Climate Change
- Loss of Habitat
- Poaching and hunting
- Pollution
Biotic Factor
LIving
Order of Classifications
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species
Abiotic factor
non-living (examples: water, temperature)
Competition
When there are multiple organisms in the same area competing for the same food srouce
Predation
When an organism kills another for food
Mutualism
When both organisms benefit from the relationship
Parasitism
When an organism takes advantage of another organism and causes harm.
Commensalism
When organisms are neither harmed or helped
Ecosystem
system of organisms interacting with each other and with their non-living surroundings.
Habitat
The place where an organism lives
Environment
The physical, chemical and biological conditions in a habitat
Community
The organisms living together in a specific habitat or ecosystem
Niche
The ‘role’ the organism plays in its habitat. This includes whether it is nocturnal or diurnal and whether it is a producer or a consumer (and what type)
Producers
Organisms that carry out photosynthesis. Also called autotrophs.
Consumers
Organisms that ingest (eat) other organisms. Also called heterotrophs.
Decomposers
Organisms that break down the bodies of dead organisms
Herbivores
Plant-eaters. Also called first-order or primary consumers
Carnivores
Eat other animals. Can be secondary, tertiary or quaternary consumers. (2nd, 3rd, 4th order consumers)
Detritivores
Consumes dead material such as leaves, other plant parts and animal remains
What factors affect range (6)
- Climate
- Food sources
- Water sources
- Landscape
- Timing (wet/dry season, breeding)
Human intervention (‘introducing’ or accidental ‘hitching a ride’)
trophic level
energy levels within food chains
What is structural adaptations?
Physical anatomy
What is Physiological adaptations?
Internal functioning of the organism
What is behavioural adaptations
Actions performed by the organism
Natural selection, 4 steps
variation, inheritance, selection and time
