A
- Malnutrition
- Alcohol excess - increases magnesium excretion
- Prolonged diuretic treatment
- Chronic mineralocorticoid excess

Uses of magnesium
A
- Pre-eclampsia - as an anti convulsant
- Relaxes vascular smooth muscle - casing vasodilatation - lowering MAP
- Tocolytic drug - decrease uterine contractions
Acts at NMJ decreasing acetylcholine release - thus neuromuscular function is weakened
