Minimizing power loss
Power loss in transmission lines is primarily due to heat generated by the current flowing through the wires (I²R losses). By reducing the current, these losses are dramatically decreased.
Efficient power transmission
High-voltage transmission allows for the use of thinner, less expensive conductors, further reducing costs and improving efficiency.
Voltage step-up and down
- At the power generating station, transformers increase the voltage of electricity to extremely high levels. This process is called “step-up” transformation.
- At the receiving end, near consumers, transformers reduce the voltage to levels suitable for distribution and consumption. This is called “step-down” transformation.
