elbow joint Flashcards
what movements occur at what joint
flexion/extension= elbow joint/ radio-ulnar joint
pronation/supination= proximal SRUJ middle RUJ distal IRUJ
describe the elbow joint synovials
humero-ulna joint= synovial hinge
humero-radial joint= synovial modified ball and socket joint
SRUJ= synovial pivot joint
describe articulation of elbow joint
elbow joint is a synovial modified hinge joint uniaxial
joint line 2cm below medial epicondyle and 1cm below lateral epicondyle
articulation is convex trochlea of distal humerus articulating with concave trochlea notch of proximal ulna
convex capitulum of distal humerus articulating with concave proximal head of radius
whats a carry angle
carry angle 10-15 degrees in men in women is 20-25
medial edge of trochlea projecting distally
disappears full flexion and pronation on extension
where does the elbow capulse attach
around edge of ulnar articular surfaces including radial notch
what ligaments are there
ulna (medial) collateral ligament=
thick triangular band which fans from medial epicondyle and has anterior, posterior and intermediate portions.
inserts into medial aspect of coronoid process and olecranon
radial collateral ligament= (prevents varus strain)
single triangular thickened band from lateral epicondyle to annular ligament
describe olecranon bursa
facilitates smooth movements of skin over olecranon process during flexion/extension
describe superior radio-ulna joint
synovial pivot joint
articulation with head of radius and radial notch of ulna
describe annular ligament
stabilises proximal RUJ
inferior diameter small
inner surface is lined with fibro cartilage
describe quadrate ligament
small ligament arising from inferior border of radial notch to neck of radius
tested by full pronation and full supination
describe radio-ulnar interosseous membrane
fibrous joint
syndesmosis
2 layers opposite direction
stabilises radius and ulnar
attachment site for deep muscles
describe inferior radio-ulnar joint
synovial pivot joint
articulation is convex lower head of ulna
concave ulnar notch of distal radius
