Effluent Flashcards
Effluent
Waste water
Measurement parameters of effluent
-Volume
-Suspended solids (TSS)
-Chemical oxygen demand (COD)
-Biological oxygen demand (BOD)
-pH
-Temperature
Effluent loading
BOD, COD, TSS
COD, Chemical oxygen demand
The amount of oxygen required to break down/oxidize the biological matter in effluent
BOD, Biological oxygen demand
The amount of oxygen required by microbes to digest the nutrients in effluent
Primary effluent treatment
Deals with pH and suspended solids
Secondary effluent treatment
Deals with BOD/COD and uses aerobic or anaerobic treatments
Tertiary effluent treatment
Further sanitization. With first and second treatments, removes ~100% of effluent loading.
Balance Tanks (primary treatment)
A tank in which settleable solids are removed by gravity. Settling tanks or lamella plates with flocculants or coagulants added to make solids easier to remove. pH is adjusted with additives.
-Dissolved air flotation: tiny air bubbles stick to the coagulated solids and float to the surface, where they are skimmed off.
Anaerobic treatment (secondary)
Anaerobic bacteria break down organic compounds in a USAB reactor (upward flow sludge blanket).
-Blanket of anaerobic microbes suspended in a tank. Effluent flows upward through blanket and is digested and converted to methane.
