Co-Products Flashcards
Co-products
Useful or sellable materials produced alongside beer.
-Spent grain
-CO2
-Spent yeast
Spent grains for animal feed
Great animal feed because of cellulose, sugars, proteins, and lipid content. Must comply with HACCP and local regulation.
Spent grains as energy production
Burning dried grains to produce heat/electricity. Grains must first be dried, then burned in a boiler to produce steam, drive a generator, or feed into local supply network.
Spent grains as biogas production
Microbes breakdown cellulose, hemicellulose, and sugars into methane gas in an anaerobic digestion plant.
Spent grain for bioethanol production
Cellulose and hemicellulose pre-treated and fed into bioreactor full of fungus, which further break down cellulose into sugars which are fed to yeast, which gives us ethanol.
CO2 collection and recovery
CO2 leaving fermenter is passed through washer, compressed, deodorized using activated carbon, condensed/liquified, and stored.
Spent yeast as animal feed
First yeast must be killed with heat treatment. Can be sold directly as a slurry, or dried in a heated drum.
