Efficiency of Information Processing Flashcards
Define reaction time
Time taken from onset of a stimulus to the onset of a response
E.g. 100m- period from hearing the gun until you were just about to push against blocks
Define movement time
Time taken to compete the task
E.g. 100m- would be time between pushing against blocks and hitting the tape
Define response time
Time taken from onset of stimulus to completion of task. Res T= react T +MT
E.g. 100m- time from hearing gun to hitting the tape
What are the 2 types of reaction time
Simple and choice
Define simple reaction time
Has one option to one stimulus
Define choice reaction time
More than one stimulus to choose from and maybe more than one response to make
Define Hicks Law
Reaction time increases as the number of choices increase
How can a performer use Hick’s Law
When serving in tennis, you can mix up serve with different direction or slice so the opponent is never sure which one they are going to face
What is a downside of Hick’s Law
Players can become familiar with their environment
E.g. an opponent may get used ti the types of serves so response becomes slightly quicker
Define single channel hypothesis
States that stimuli can only be processed one at a time, so 2nd stimuli has to wait until 1st is processed. Delay in processs of 2nd stimuli ^response time, explaining Hicks law
Define the psychological refractory period
A delay when a second stimulus is presented before the first has been processed. Could cause performer to freeze

Define anticipation
Pre-judging a stimulus
What are the 2 types of anticipation
Temporal and spatial
Define temporal anticipation
When it is going to happen
