Effects of Latitude, Relief, Aspect + Distance from sea Flashcards
1
Q
Latitude
A
- the location of a place in relation to the equator
- measured in degrees
- places near North + South Pole are colder + drier
due to high latitude - places near equator are warmer + wetter due to low
latitude
2
Q
Relief
A
- the height and shape of the landscape
- the temp drops 10oC higher every 100m because fewer
solid particles in air meaning less heat to obtain - places higher up are cooler + wetter due to the drop in
temp - in the west, land is higher so more rain in this area
3
Q
Aspect
A
- the direction that a places lies in relation to the sun
- places that are South facing are usually warmer +
sunnier since they face towards equator - also sheltered from cold Northerly winds
- North facing places are colder due to suns shadow +
being exposed to cold North Pole winds
4
Q
Distance From Sea
A
- the location of places (inland/along coast)
- places closer to sea experience mild + wet conditions
since clouds loose moisture as blown across land - places further from sea are drier + warmer in summer as
sun heats land areas quicker than seas + oceans - in winter temps are more extreme because land cant’t
keep the heat - the seas + oceans can retain heat in winter meaning
costal areas will be warmer
