Depressions + Anticyclones Flashcards
An area of pressure which moves from West to East in the UK?
Depression - low pressure
What Brings dry, settled weather
and why?
Anticyclone - this is because, cold air sinks meaning clouds don’t form and sinking air creates high pressure therefore no formation of clouds means no rain
We can recognise a depression as there will be…?
- cold fronts
- warm fronts
- very tightly packed isobars
- air pressure will decrease/be low
In a depression, which is the first front to pass over?
Warm front
In a depression, when warm air meets cold air what happens?
The warm air rises above the cold air, then it will drizzle
What does widely spaced isobars mean in an anticyclone?
The weather will be calm and not windy
What happens if there are no fronts in an anticyclone?
- there will be no rain
- in Jan/Feb because of lack of cloud cover - cold + frosty
+ mist + fog - Jun/July - hot + sunny
What is the next front to pass through in a depression?
cold front
When do cold fronts occur in a depression?
- when cold air meets warm air
- cold air pushes warm air upwards
- as warm air is pushed up, it will :
cool, condense, form clouds + rain
In a depression what do winds do?
- windy if close together
- blow along isobars
- blow anticlockwise
