EENT Flashcards
Etio and tx blepharitis
Etio: eyelid gland secretions or Staph
Tx: baby shampoo and/or topical ABX
Viral conjunctivitis etio
Adenovirus 3, 8, 19
Bacterial conjunctivitis pathogens
Strep pneumoniae
Staph aureus
H flu
Moraxella
Pathogen Dacrocystitis
Staph> Strep. Tx with Keflex or augmentin
Complication of orbital cellulitis
Encephalitis: admit pts with orbital cellulitis (usually pets) to prevent encephalitis
Tx of corneal abrasion from contact lenses
Fluroquinolone drops to cover Pseudomonas
Prolonged steroid use can cause what eye condition?
Cataracts
Retinal detachment associated with what 2 comorbidites?
Diabetes
Sickle cell disease
Tx Hyphema
Eye drops to dilate
Strabismus associated with what other condition?
Retinoblastoma
Conductive hearing loss: weber, rinne
CONDUCTIVE:
Weber: localize to bad ear
Rinne: BC>AC (negative Rinne)
Sensorineural loss: weber, rinne
SENSORY LOSS:
Weber: localizes to good ear
Rinne: AC>BC (positive Rinne)
Nasal polyps associated with what other condition?
Cystic fibrosis (about 1/4 of ppl with cystic fibrosis have nasal polyps)
Most important diagnostic to order in a pt with Meinere’s?
MRI: R/O acoustic neuroma
Anterior vs posterior blepharitis
anterior: Staph or seborrheic
Posterior: meibomian gland dysfunction
Most common cause of orbital cellulitis?
Paranasal sinusitis
Tx herpes keratitis
Topical Trifluridine 1% q 2 hours x 10-14d
Avoid topical steroids
Can use oral antivirals (zovirax) if pt is not pregnant and does not have renal disease if pt cannot use a topical agent or has bilateral eye disease
Most common eye tumor in children
Retinoblastoma. Sx: strabismus, leukocoria (white pupil)
Giant cell arteritis associated with what eye condition?
Retinal artery occlusion
Reiters syndrome triad
arthritis
conjunctivtis
urinary sx
(Can’t see, can’t pee can’t climb a tree= Reiter’s)
Amblyopia definition
permanent loss of visual acuity in a child from abnormal visual experience during the maturation phase of sight development. Can be caused by Strabismus
Sx acute angle closure glaucoma
Halos around lights pain pupil mildly reactive and mid dilated nausea IOP> 40
Normal appearing TM with conductive hearing loss noted with tuning fork tests.
Otosclerosis
Pt has conductive hearing loss (wax) in the Right ear. Weber and Rinne?
Weber lateralizes to the bad (right) ear.
Rinne negative : BC>AC
Pt has sensorineural hearing loss in the right ear. Weber and Rinne?
Weber lateralizes to the good (left) ear.
Rinne positive : AC>BC
Horner’s
Miosis and Ptosis
Argyll Robinson pupils
Syphilis
Maybe DM neuropathy
Accommodate but do not react to light
