A
- Constantly sought revenge against Charles after being imprisoned by him for four years as a child
- This aim motivated him to sign the Treaty of Boulogne in 1550 just to keep the English out of the picture

- English fears of Charles invading in order to restore Catholicism remained strong
- Jun 1549 - Somerset ratifies the Anglo-Imperial Treaty of 1544 in response to a French and Scottish alliance, thus showing friendship despite the Reformation

A
- Henry II sends 4000 troops to Scotland, resulting in the Battle of Pinkie with England
- Somerset manages to capture Edinburgh, but needs to keep it garrisoned
- 24 garrisons are established and 14 more are planned

- Henry II aids the Scots at Leith (as per the Auld Alliance) with 10,000 troops
- Mary Queen of Scots is removed and made to promise to marry Dauphin, the heir to the French throne
- Scots harass Haddington, attempting to take over one of the garrisons
- Somerset therefore has to send more troops up north

A
- Numerous rebellions begin the south of England
- Somerset doesn’t send troops to the south, preferring to keep them in Scotland
- Aug - troops withdraw from Scotland due to the Western Rebellion, meaning the country is lost
- The French attack Boulogne, cutting off its supply lines to Calais. They also prevent ships reaching Boulogne via the Channel
