Education (Scholar Role) Have an appropriate academic history and a commitment to ongoing medical education Flashcards
What have you done to show your commitment to anaesthetics and medical education
Clinically: try to get as much experience as I can in anaesthetics, from my MD project to getting involved in multiple audits during junior doctor years.
Academic: enrolled in the primary lecture program, completed the perioperative monash short course.
Teaching others is an interest of mine, as I found medical school clinical coaching very confronting. I’ve been involved in multiple different teaching roles as a medical student peer tutor to clinical coach throughout the years. I am currently an associate lecturer at Mater Clinical School, currently clinical coaching second year medical students. I have also given tutorials to the Interns on basic ward call scenarios.
What makes a good teacher?
From my own experience as a student and as a teacher, I have identified three key components that make a good teacher.
1. Approachable, not intimidating - being personable, as a medical student I was often afraid of my clinical coach, I felt my learning was impaired as I was afraid to ask them questions as I may appear inadequate.
- Awareness of students weakness/limitations - asking questions that are within the scope of their practice and understanding the curriculum/expectations of that level. Asking overtly difficult questions can lead to demoralizing, there is a fine balance.
- Being open to feedback - being able to ask students at the session for what areas I could improve in. For instance at the end of each clinical coaching teaching, I would ask my students what they thought was good about the session. These 3 aspects has been able to let me engage with students and continuous improve myself skills as well as theirs.

What is the 4 step approach to feedback?
Timely, Reflection, Focused, Plan for review another time
Give me an example of your feedback?
The other day during clinical coaching, I took my students to see a patient with a cardiovascular history.
Firstly, I gave them some aims to focus on cardiac risk factors.
After the session, away from the patient bedside. Igave them timely feedback. Firstly I asked them how they felt about the process,
Plan for them to review later on
