What is labeling?
Assuming about a student, giving them a label and treating them based on the label.
What did Becker (1971) find?
Interviewed 60 Chicago High School teachers about judgement about students.
- Labeling each student from how they compared to thier ‘ideal’ student
- Assumptions based on thought
What did Circouel and Kituse (1963) find?
Looked at education counselors in US high schools who advising students courses to take.
- Assumptions about class
- W/c students pushed torward “working class” jobs.
What is a subculture?
Is a group of people with different norms/values to the mainstream culture.
What did Lacey (1970) find?
That teacher labeling and differentiation e.g sets
Lead to a Pro and Anti-School cultures
What did Fuller (1984) find?
Studied a group of high achieving black girls in London, who were able to (with the help of a supportive group) defy teachers labeling.
What did Gillborn and Youdell (2004) find?
Say that League tables create a ‘A-C Economy’
- Creating 3 groups
- 1 : Ignore smart kids (They pass)
- 2: Focus those on the middle who have ability to pass
- 3: Forgot those who they believe cannot pass.
What did Gerwitz (1995) find?
Explains how successful school try to attract m/c families and try to put off w/c families.
- Marketisation of schools
- Parents have to sign contracts which demand level of commitment and results etc.
What did Troyna and Williams (1986) find?
The speech hierarchy, and that put people with m/c English at top of the list.
This adds to the labeling based on accent regional or international accent.
What did Louise Archer (2010) find?
Explained how students form own identities if they do not fit into the pro-school sub culture.
Leading to ‘Nike’ identities, where people may were certain clothes to gain status in certain groups in the schools.
What did Tess Ridge (2002) find?
Finical situation could affect self esteem due to what the student is wearing e.g 2nd hand clothes may affect esteem making it harder to work.
