Education - Ethnicity Flashcards
What is the evidence that there’s difference in achievement by ethnicity?
GCSE Results 2020 ‘Attainment 8’:
Chinese ethnic group had the highest score out of all ethnic groups (64.3)
White Gypsy and Roma ethnic groups had the lowest (19.1)
What did Gillborn and Mirza (2000) say about ethnicity and achievement?
Data from Youth Cohort Studies (1997-1998) shows a strong relationship between class and ethnicity but African Caribbean children (especially boys) did worse than other groups even when class is included
What is Gillborn and Mirza (2000)’s reason for ethnic underachievement?
Material deprivation
What does Platt (2011) say about material deprivation, class and achievement?
Hourly rates of pay for male full-time employees in UK by race are similar to patterns found in educational achievement by race
This suggests some do better due to higher income
What is the criticisms of Platt (2011)s study?
Bangladeshi children had a higher attainment score than other ethnicities, even though their hourly wage was the lowest out of all ethnicities
What are the three external factors for children of different ethnicities achieving differently?
Material deprivation
Cultural deprivation
Family
Wider culture
What does Bereiter and Engelmann (1966) say about cultural deprivation?
Language spoken by low income black American families is in adequate for educational success
What is the criticism of Bereiter and Engelmann’s theory?
2015 pupils whos first language wasn’t English 77.2% made the expected level of progress against 70.9 of those whos first language is English
Who argues family attitudes are the biggest factor?
Ruth Lupton (2004)
Tony Sewell (2009)
What does Ruth Lupton (2004) argue about family attitudes?
Asian parents are more likely to be supportive of schools policies because the behaviour expected by children to adults in these families are the same as the school model
What does Tony Sewell (2009) say about family and wider culture?
Lack of male role models in black families mean black boys are offered ‘perverse loyalty and love’ from other boys whos role-model is the ultra-tough media construction
What is Tony Sewell’s evidence?
He interviewed successful boys and found they thought the greatest barrier to success was pressure from other boys as it was seen as ‘selling out to the white establishment’
Who criticises cultural deprivation as a reason for differing achievement?
Keddie (culturally different not deprived) schools are ethnocentric
Gillborn (2008) education system is institutionally racist
Black Caribbean families provide positive female role models
Andrew McCulloch (2014) ethnic minority pupils more likely to aspire to go to uni
What is the evidence for racism in wider society affecting grades in school?
Wood et al sent 3 closely matched job application to 1,000 job vacancies, two from minority groups and 1 from a white person. One in 16 ‘ethnic minority’ application were offered an interview against 1 in 9 ‘white applications’
What are the percentages of people believing schools are racist?
White: 15%
All ethnic minority groups: 26%
Black British: 42%
