  • 1976 - Government forced to direct grammar schools to become comprehensive schools, thus many grammar schools became private, and so free places were removed and poorer parents couldn’t afford the fees

  • Privileged position of classical education in the universities should be challenged in favour of Science and Engineering
  • Universities should be dramatically expanded to cater for large numbers of students
  • Barlow report stated that there were not enough scientists and engineering students and also argued for a government-funded expansion of universities

What was university like in the 60s and 70s?

A
  • 1961 - Government set up Robbins Committee
  • Opened more universities - By 1970, 11 more opened
  • 1971 - Open university was founded
    (Advised against by Education Secretary Margaret Thatcher)
  • Large numbers of men and women were able to go to university and were enabled to obtain qualifications
  • Large increase in students
  • By 1970s - 1/2 a million students in further education
  • Social class within universities remained a controversial issue
  • Pupils from private schools has an ‘elitist’ attitude
