State of being varied, as by family structure, race, religion, socioeconomic class, primary language, ethnic group, etc.
Culture
The various understandings, traditions, and guidance of the groups to which we belong; the ways of living developed by a social group and transmitted to succeeding generations
Family-centered
Focus on student and parents as a collective unit, active in child’s education
Bioecological theory
microsystem: setting where one lives and the near environment
mesosystem: relationships derived from mircosystem
exosystem: system removed from direct access of individual, has an indirect effect
macrosystem: culture in which an individual lives; values or beliefs systems
chronosystem: time, era in which one lives and effects behavior
Parent advocacy
importance: expand opportunities and enhance the quality of life for young children with disabilities and families
Authoritarian parenting style
parent places high value on conformity and obedience, are often rigid, and express little warmth to a child
Authoritative parenting style
parents give children reasonable demands and consistent limits, express warmth and affection, and listen to the child’s point of view
permissive parenting style
parents make few demands and rarely use punishment; lets children walk all over them
Child abuse laws
teachers are mandated reporters and must report suspected abuse
