Why are Plessy vs Ferguson and Brown vs Board of education important to special education today
Because it made the move towards responsible inclusion for students with special needs
Early stages of special education
In early history, they would separate individuals with special needs in society and in classes at school. They just recently made the steps towards being more inclusive.
Section 504
Government plan that gives free and appropriate education for everyone. It is used if someone does not qualify for an IEP.
ADA
Americans with Disabilities Act- prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities (wheelchair access, elevators in buildings, handicap parking, etc.)
IDEA
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act- insures that students with disabilities have free and appropriate education for everyone
FAPE
Free and Appropriate Education
LRE
Least Restrictive Environment
IEP
Individual Education Program- ages k5–21
IFSP
Individualized Family Service Program- like an IEP for ages birth to k5
Three D’s of learning disabilities
Dyscalculia, dyslexia, dysgraphia
“Average” IQ
Middle of bell curve (70-130)
IQ of someone with Down Syndrome
Half way and below
IQ of someone with an intellectual disability
70 and below
IQ of someone who is gifted and talented

IQ of someone with SLD

Why is cultural diversity an at risk category?
Social expectance, poverty, risk of falling behind because of language barrier
Define Intelligence
How well an individual processes and displays knowledge. Intelligence can be measured (IQ) but does not define a persons ability.
Name two theorists that support your definition of intelligence
Howard Gardner MI- everyone learns in a different way
Piaget- Cognitive development- change and grows throughout life
Who are the members of an IEP team
- Parent of student
- One GenEd teacher
- One SpEd teacher
- Representative of the local education agency (LEA)
- Student can but does not have to until age 14
Special education time line
15 days- to form a contract
60 days- to get an assessment
30 days- to create an IEP
Related services
The Staff- OT, PT, phychologial services, speech adn language, etc.
Supplementary services
The Stuff- taped books, computer/tablet adaptations, peer tutoring
