Inflammation of skin
Eczema
Patches of skin become rough and inflamed with blisters causing itching and bleeding. Often presents in infancy but at anytime
Type of Eczema: Endogenous
Atopic, Discoid, Pompholyx, Gravitational, Seborrhoeic
Type of Eczema: Exogenous
Irritant, Allergic, Photodermatitis
Atopic triad
Eczema, Asthma, Hayfever
Criteria of Atopic Eczema
Itchy skin condition Onset < 2years Skin crease involvement (includes cheeks) Dry skin First degree relative of atopic disease Visual flexural dermatitis
Cause of Atopic Eczema
- Mutation in filagrin- dry skin
- Immune dysregulation- production of Th2 cells
Aggravating factors for Eczema
Dryness, Stress, Infection, Allergy
Infantile Eczema
Usually starts on the face, nappy area affected, can affect knees when crawling
Early Childhood Eczema
From 18-24 moves to flexures
Neck often involved
‘Dirty Neck’ appearance
Demi-Morgan (Infra orbital) folds
Adult type Eczema
Increased lichenification
Flexures and hands
Pitting and ridging of nail
Drug induced photosensitivity
Thiazide Diuretics
Tetracyclines
NSAIDS
Photocontact dermatitis
Phototoxic chemicals: plants, vegetables, fruit, fragrances in cosmetics

- IgE/RAST
- Patch tests
