Pathogenesis of Acne
Androgens cause increase sebum production, changes in skin and inflammation
What bacteria colonises hair follicles
Propionibacterium acnes
Commonly affected by acne
Teenagers, adolescents
Presentation of acne
Seborrhoea, comedones, papules, pustules nodules and cysts, scarring

Excessive discharge of sebum from hair follicles

Pictorial grades of facial acne, back and chest
Acne treatment: Benzoyl Peroxide
in gels, cream or face wash, antibacterial, comedolytic, bleaching
Acne treatment: Retinoids e.g Adapalene, Tretinoin
Vitamin A based drugs, increases production of collagen reducing fine lines and wrinkles , photosensitive
Acne treatment: Topical antibiotics
Erythromycin + Zinc
Clindamycin + Benzoyl Peroxide

Anti-androgens contraceptives e.g. Dianette, Yasmin

- For severe acne, 4-6 month course
- 90% risk of birth defects, contraception mandatory, monthly pregnancy test required
