Ecosystems Flashcards
First order consumer
In a food chain, the position of a herbivore
Second order consumer
The animal feeding on the first order consumer
Third order consumer
The animal feeding on the second order consumer
Herbivore
A plant eating animal
Carnivore
An animal that feeds on other animals
Omnivore
An animal that eats on plants and animals
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants make their food
Word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water (sunlight & chlorophyll) produces glucose + oxygen
Biotic factors
A living factor of the environment
What are the 5 biotic factors
Competition Predation Mutualism Parasitism Commensalism
Abiotic factors
A non living factor of the environment
What are the 6 abiotic factors
Water Temperature Fire Light Soil type Gas levels
Competition
When 2 or more organisms rely on the same environmental resource
Predation
Behaviour of one animal feeding on another
Symbiosis
The close relationship of 2 dissimilar organisms
Mutualism
A symbiotic relationship where both organisms benefit
Commensalism
A symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits but is unharmed
Parasitism
A symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits and one is harmed
Decomposer
Break down dead organic matters and wastes, recycle matter for the producers to reuse they also allow matter to cycle in all ecosystems - fungi and bacteria
Food web
A chain of organisms and animals that all rely on each other.
Producer
1st order
2nd order
3rd order
Adaptations
A feature that an organism has that enables it to survive
Interdependence
Relationship between organisms where one
each affects the others survival
Ectothermic
Animals that obtain body heat from outside their body
Endothermic
Animals that can generate body heat internally
Structural adaptation
A body part that helps an organism to survive - a ghosts bat wings allows it to fly
Behavioural adaptations
A feature of an organisms habitat, actions or way of life that helps it - the mouse hides in a burrow in the day, helping the mouse avoid dehydration
Functional adaptations
A feature of the way an organisms body works - increasing heart rate is a functional adaptation
Consumer
Organisms that require a ready made source of food
Community
All the living organisms in a an ecosystem
Abiotic factors that impact frogs
Temperature
Natural disasters
Biotic factors that impact frogs
Predators
Lack of food source
Habitat destroyed
Energy flow in ecosystems
- how does it flow
- how is the food material available
- fact
- energy flows from one organism to another as it is eaten
- the food material available to each organism is only that which is in the body cells of the organism it eats
- there is little energy available to the organisms by the time it reaches the end of the chain
