Ecosystems Flashcards
What is an abiotic component?
Non-living environmental factor that has an influence over ecosystem (soil type e.t.c)
What is a biome?
Large, distinct region of earth with similar climate, soil, plants and animals
What is a biotic component?
Living organisms interact with environment and other organisms in an ecosystem
What is a coniferous forest biome?
Biome at high latitudes- has conifer trees and cold climate
Consumers
Organisms that receive energy from consuming living organisms
Decomposers
Organisms that break down organic material and release nutrients back into ecosystem
Desert biome
Around 30º north and south of equator- low rain levels and extreme daily temperature fluctuations
Ecosystem
Natural system in which community of plants and animals interact with each other and the physical environment
Food chain
Linear relationship showing biotic interactions within ecosystem- from producer to final consumer
Food web
Series of different webs representing interaction between multiple producers and consumer within an ecosystem,
Mediterranean biome
40-45º north of equator- mild, moist winter and hot, dry summers
Nutrient cycling
Transfer of nutrients through ecosystem from decay of organic material to production and energy of living organisms
Producers
Organisms that convert energy from environment into sugars
Savanna biome
15-30º north and south of equator- high temp, dry summers, wet winters
Temperate deciduous forest biom
40-50º north and south of equator- deciduous trees and moderate rain
