A
• Important as managers make decisions for conservation, it became apparent that the ecosystem must be considered as a whole
○ Community analysis
○ How organisms interact in response to each other + habitat
○ Need to know full complexity of the habitat to understand what choices to make

a species on which other species in an ecosystem largely depend, such that if it were removed the ecosystem would change drastically.
